The CCC women's basketball team opened up the 2012 season with a thrilling 68-63 win over Union College on Monday night. It wasn't necessarily the way the coaching staff drew it up, they needed a late comeback and overtime to do it, but it was good to start the season with a win. The Tigers and Warriors both got off to a slow start. By the time the buzzer sounded for the end of the half, things were knotted up at 25 apiece.
In the second half, both teams made some adjustments offensively, and found it a little easier putting points on the board. The Tigers ran into a little bit of a dry spell midway through the second half and the Warriors inched out to a nine point lead 43-34. The Tigers began to clawing their way back, cutting the lead to 6 on a big three pointer by freshman Libby Regier. From there the Tigers continued to chip away at the lead and with less than a minute to play found themselves trailing by 2. On their final possession of regulation, Raven Void found 6'2 freshman Kadetra O'Brine on the low block. O'Brine spun and laid the ball up off the glass to tie the game at 58.
In the overtime session, the Tigers continued to build on the momentum they had going at the end of regulation. Regier got things started for the Tigers with another big three pointer on the Tigers' first possession of the period. The Tigers stopped the Warriors on their next possession and then Ciara Alderson extended the lead to 63-58 at the other end of the floor. The Warriors cut the lead to 3 on an uncontested layup after turning the ball over. Regier then extended the lead back to 6, 66-60 with her second three pointer of overtime. The Warriors' Allison Shipman, who torched the Tiger defense with 23 points made things interesting with a big three pointer of her own. Raven Void iced the game for the Tigers on the next possession when she was fouled going to the hole. Void made both free throws to give the Tigers a 68-63 victory.
The Tigers had two freshmen score in double figures led by Kadetra O'Brine who had a double double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Libby Regier who was 5 of 13 from behind the 3 point arc for 17 points. Sarah Hawthorne and Ciara Alderson just missed out on double figures scoring 8 points. Raven Void nearly recorded a somewhat unorthodox double double. She had 9 rebounds and 9 assists for the game.
Coach Lancaster knows there is a long way to go, and the Tigers have much to improve on but he was pleased with the overall effort of his team saying, "We didn't play verywell tonight but fortunately we got away with a win. Union wasscrappy and theyjust out hustled us at times, but we expect to get the kinks worked out for Bethel on Thursday. I was pleased with our tenacityat the end of the game and in overtime and we will be able to build on that."
CCC is 1-0 on the season. They are back in action on Thursday evening on the road at Bethel College. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
