The CCC women's basketball wrapped up their season with a 49-65 loss at Barclay College last night. the Tigers couldn't overcome 33 turnovers even though they only trailed the Bears at halftime by four, 26-30. Shooting percentages were relatively the same, and the Tigers actually out rebounded the bears, but the Bears' ¾ court press gave the Tigers fits.
In the second half, the Tigers got to within two points of the Bears, but then the Bears capitalized on a series of turnovers and missed shots by the Tigers to break the game open. The Tigers never got the spread under double digits the rest of the way.
The Tigers were led in scoring by Samantha Graves who scored 13 points on the evening. She needed just 10 points to eclipse the 1000 point mark for her career which she did early in the second half. Sarah Hawthorne also was in double figures, coming off the bench to score 10 points. Seniors Rachel Graves and Lauren Benson finished with four and six points respectively.
Coach Lancaster summed up the season this way, "Overall it was a difficult year as we really struggled at times to put a good product on the court; however, we did have some positives that we can point to as indicators of some success. First, on the negative side we weren't very good offensively. Though we executed much better toward the end of the year we still struggled to hit open shots and create offensive opportunities. Another problem area for us was turnovers. We had way too many unforced turnovers night in and night out which limited our ability to be competitive. On the positive side defensively we finished above 300 steals on the season averaging over 10 a game and our defensive field goal percentage was good. Samantha Graves reaching 1000 points was a positive part of the season as the team rallied around her to help her get there. I thought our freshmen steadily improved throughout the year and made great strides in overcoming certain weaknesses. We showed that we have room for improvement but I believe with a good recruiting class mixed in with some of this year's group we can be a much better team in the future. I'm confident that we will get the program turned around and on the right track."
The Tigers finished the season at 6-24. They will lose the Graves sisters and Benson to graduation, but the core of their team will be back next season, a little older, and a lot more experienced.
