For some, the Tigers did the unimaginable tonight knocking off Colorado Christian University in the first round of the NCCAA Central Region Regional Basketball Tournament 88-86. CCU is a NCAA division II team that is just two years removed from winning this same tournament in Central's gym back in 2009. Despite their 7-20 record, the CCU Cougars were the favorite in a lot of people's minds, but not in the minds of the CCC players and staff. The CCC coaching staff has done an amazing job, working tirelessly all seasoncoming up with a solid game plan fora lot of tough opponents this year. In talking with them this week, they were very confident that they could match up well with the Cougars and get a victory, so tonight's outcome was not a surprise to the Tigers
The Tigers played a solid first half, and led at the break by six 44-38. The Cougars played better in the second half, putting pressure on the Tiger all the way to the end, forcing CCC to win the game in dramatic fashion. Down three, 83-86 with less than 10 seconds to play, the Cougars hit a big three pointer to tie the game at 86. On the ensuing possession, the Tigers in bounded the ball to Senior Terrance Guillory, who missed all of the first semester, and has seen sparse action this semester, dribbled the length of the floor and put up a shot that just beat the buzzer.
Chris Jones and Kaelon Gary led the way for the Tigers offensively. Jones had 22 points, and Gary had a double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Tigers was 1st team All Region selection Don Gavin. Don scored 13 points, grabbed 8 boards, and dished out 6 assists before fouling out late in the game.
The Tigers are now 22-9 on the season. Tomorrow at 4:00 the Tigers square off against another NCAA division II school and the tournament's #1 seed, the Dallas Baptist University Patriots.
