Central Christian - Fri, Oct. 6, 2017

It's a busy weekend for the Central Christian College fall sports programs, as well as some of the sports who aren't in season yet. It's homecoming weekend, and Central's campus is sure to be buzzing with activity.

Unfortunately, not all of the Tiger sports teams are home this weekend. The Tiger volleyball squad will actually be on the road this weekend for a pair of SAC conference games down in Texas. When the Central got confirmation that they would be joining the SAC last spring, conference schedules were dictated to the Tigers, and it turned out that this weekend, the Tigers would have to be on the road.

They will open up on Friday at 7:00 pm at Texas Wesleyan University. If you are unable to make it down to Texas to watch the Tigers live, you can follow the action online here. The Tigers are currently 4-10 on the season (1-6 in the SAC), and snapped a five match losing streak last Saturday evening on the road at Union College. Texas Wesleyan is currently second in the conference standings at 16-1 overall, and 6-1 against conference opponents. They currently rank 10th in the nation in hitting percentage, and their middle blocker, Tierra Coverson is 7th in the nation in blocks per game.

It doesn't get any easier for the Tigers on Saturday as they head south east from TWU and head to Waxahachie, TX to play the conference leading Southwest Assemblies of God University Lions. SAGU sits atop the conference standings at 16-4 overall, and a perfect 7-0 against teams in the SAC. Their offensive leader is Jessica Sodich who is currently ranked 7th in the nation in total kills with 304.

On Saturday, the Central cross country teams will be back in action after a two week hiatus from competition. Originally the Tigers were set to compete at the Fort Hays State University invitational, but a late shift was made, and the Tigers instead are now headed to North Newton, KS to run in Bethel College's Thresher Invite.

Mid-afternoon on Saturday, the homecoming festivities will culminate with the Tiger soccer teams taking the pitch against the SAGU Lions. The Tiger women (3-7, 0-2) will kick off at 3:30 pm against a Lions team that is 5-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The Tigers are in the midst of a four game losing skid, though in their last outing against the Southwestern Christian University Eagles, they showed signs of turning things around. For the Lions, they are coming off of a 2-0 win at home over the Bacone College Warriors last Saturday. The Tigers and Lions have met four previous times dating back to the 2008. The Tigers lead the series 3-1, but dropped the latest installment 1-3 on the road back in 2015.

The Tiger men, who come into the weekend a 7-3, 0-2, will kick off against the Lions at approximately 6:30 pm. The Tigers have dropped their last two contests to open up SAC play to two of the top teams in the conference. Both games were decided by a single goal. In both of those contests, Coach Hoxie indicated in his postgame comments, that he believes the Tigers are right where they need to be and are headed in a positive direction. On Saturday, they will take a Lions team that has struggled this season thus far. At this point in the season, they are sitting at 1-6-2 overall, and 0-2 in the SAC. They are currently in the midst of a 6 game winless streak with four losses and two ties. The have opened SAC play with back to back losses at home against John Brown University and Bacone College.

Other Tigers sports in action this weekend include the Tiger basketball teams, the men's wrestling team, and the men's lacrosse team. On Friday night, the Tiger basketball teams will have their annual late night preview. The teams will be introduced at 9:00 pm in the Jerry E. Alexander Arena, and events will include a dunking exhibition, and a three point shooting contest.

On Saturday afternoon, the Tiger grapplers are planning on an open practice on the plaza at 1:00 pm. If the weather doesn't cooperate, they will mover the practice into the north gym. Also holding an open practice will be the men's lacrosse team. They will be demonstrating their skills and introducing the sport to those who are unfamiliar with it, at 4:00 pm on the west practice field behind the Tiger softball field.

Lots of things to see this weekend. Come out and enjoy the homecoming festivities and cheer on the Tigers!
