Outdoor Track & Field - Mon, Mar. 14, 2016

Winfield, KS – CCC track and field team opened up the outdoor portion of their schedule last Thursday at the Southwestern College Invitational in Winfield, Kansas.

Below is a summary of the event from CCC head coach Dan Swaney:

The weather was wonderful. The temperature was warm enough for the sprinters but cool enough for the distance runners and the wind wasn't strong enough to have a major effect on the races.

On one hand I wish we had done a little better since we didn't end up breaking any of our existing school records, a first since we started both Track programs last year, but on the other hand I'm very happy with how things went. We had several people either competing for the first time this year or doing new events so I wasn't quite sure what to expect of them, but our returners ran very well. Everyone outperformed what they did at this meet last year. Several athletes did so well that they ran their second-best races of their careers and they all equaled the kinds of performances they didn't get until late last season. So we are far ahead of where we were last year and it's a good sign of what we should be able to do by season's end.

Two of the most notable performances of the meet were Madison Strickland in the 1500 and Cierra Hess in the 5k. Madison ran nearly 20 seconds faster than what her indoor mile from three weeks ago would convert to. Cierra did her first 5k on the track and ran an impressive 66 seconds better than her fastest from Cross Country last fall.
